Course description
This course will teach you how to master a critical piece of fashion equipment. Good sewing machine skills can help you achieve more sophisticated results, increasing your speed and accuracy as well as the quality of your designs. This short course aims to equip you with the knowledge you need to attempt a wide range of projects regardless of your craft.
On this course you will learn the anatomy of the machine, what it does and how. You will also learn how to troubleshoot problems and cure most of them before they happen. You will be taught basic sewing skills as well as how to construct button holes and zips.
In weekly online workshops you will cover a range of topics designed to build your skills and confidence in how to sew garments. You will be set small projects to be completed in your own time and discuss in the live sessions. This multidisciplinary course will teach you skills you can use for areas as varied as dressmaking, soft furnishings and bag making.
If you have ever felt puzzled by your sewing machine, this course is for you. It will demystify the various stitches, attachments and needles available. Using a sewing machine is a useful life skill that leads to practical solutions both professionally and at home. You could become a better fashion designer or garment technologist, develop your portfolio for a degree application or continue sewing as a fun, creative hobby.

- Set up and thread a machine to achieve a variety of seams and finishes on a range of fabrics

This course is for those new to machine sewing or those who are returning to it after a break. It covers basic sewing skills every machinist would need know to tackle any discipline including dressmaking, patchwork, soft furnishings and a range of stitched crafts.

- Threading the bobbin and inserting into the machine correctly.
- Threading the machine and testing/adjusting the tension for the perfect stitch
- Selecting the correct stitch pattern, optimum length and width for the desired
- results and how to adjust the machine settings to achieve this.
- Selecting the correct needle size for the technique and the fabric used.
- Seam variations including flat, French and felled seams and when to use them
- Buttonholes
- A variety of zip techniques and when to use them.
- Blind hems for clothes and curtains
- Understanding and working with woven and stretch fabrics.
- Decorative effects including couching, twin needles and insertion stitches
- Mock cover stitch hems to finish sleeves and hems on stretch fabrics
- Essential technical sewing terms used in construction techniques
