Fashion Drawing and Illustration for 16 to 18 Year Olds Online Short Course

Course description

The main objective of this course is for the students to start developing their own style of fashion illustration through experimentation and taking inspiration from different sources.

During this course we will explore a wide range of media, such as inks, watercolour, coloured pastels and pen. You will learn to develop your own illustration handwriting and communicate a strong sense of fashion ideas through your own unique style.

We will examine the creative process from the inspiration and experimentation phase, through to the finished designs. Acknowledging both men's and women's catwalk collections

and looking at the exciting ways in which they portray different styles of fashion. We will look at different garment designs, fabric and structure and how to apply this to our illustrations.

We will explore the importance of experimenting through colour and mark-making to develop a range of creative techniques and ideas, and examine ways to communicate

movement, colour and print in our illustrations. Students will have the chance to experiment through the use of collage and different mediums to develop their fashion illustrations.

Fashion illustrators such as Stina Persson, Beth Frazer, Julie Verhoeven, David Downton, Celia Birtwell and Erte will be covered alongside contemporary fashion illustrators

such as Elyse Blackshaw, Meagan Morrison, Jessica Bird, Anjelica Roselyn and Tony Green. Students will also undertake their own research to develop ideas further.

By the end of the course students should have some exciting illustrations based on their own unique style. They should also have some catwalk ranges illustrated that can form the basis of a new design collection to inspire them for future fashion projects. They will know how to present a final collection through mood boards including technical fashion flats and colour pallets and be able to apply the knowledge and skills learnt during the course to create and express their fashion illustrations.
