Design with Scents
This unique, highly interactive course will introduce you to the concept of designing places through the sense of smell. For professionals and students across the creative fields and for fragrance lovers, it will provide you with a basic knowledge of fragrance and sensory design skills.
Lead by a combination of olfactory experts you will explore how to use scents to enhance projects in the fields of design and architecture, marketing and communication.
The course includes:
- Developing a cross-sensory understanding of fragrances
- How scents can affect emotions
- The scents that form the perfumer's palette
- Blending scents: ingredients, accords and compositions
- Analysing a specific environment and developing scent design solutions
- How social and cultural fashions are reflected in perfume
- How to translate an idea with fragrance
The fee includes a personal perfume kit which can be used as a reference for future projects, as well for further home study.

All levels. The course format accommodates all levels, from beginners to advanced. Participants have included experienced professionals from perfume/design industries as much as beginners from these and other fields. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.
Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older.

Nicola Pozzani works on fragrance worldwide, combining luxury, craftsmanship and innovation. He studied sensory design at the Università dell’Immagine of Milan, where he trained under Master Perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, before starting his career in fragrance with leading global companies Symrise and LVMH Acqua di Parma. Currently In-House Bespoke Perfumer for Floris London, he runs olfactory workshops at LCF, Slade School of Fine Arts UCL and Bern University of the Arts in Switzerland, pioneering the teaching of fragrance in art and design. Past clients include perfume brand Le Labo and the Haute Parfumerie L’Odore at Harvey Nichols Riyadh, KSA. He has collaborated with Master Perfumer Christophe Laudamiel and presented at the Victoria & Albert Museum and British Society of Perfumers amongst others.
Marianne Martin is a perfumer or 'nose' and has been working in the fragrance industry for over 40 years, mostly from the UK but supplying markets around the world. She has had the honour of being president of the British Society of Perfumers. Since 2011 Marianne has been lecturing in perfumery for the MSc in Cosmetic Science at the London College of Fashion and enjoys sharing her passion for perfumery.
In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:
- Notepad and pen
- Laptop or tablet
