Course description

Course overview

In this course, you will prepare several paintings for hanging and, crucially, learn the best ways to handle them and how to avoid damaging frames and canvases. You will be shown how to use a range of hanging systems, be guided through the mathematics of spacing and measuring up, familiarise yourself with filling in forms including loan agreements and condition and facilities reports.

Expect to handle, hang and install using a variety of tools and fixing methods.

This course is suitable for anyone working in museums and galleries, including front-of-house staff who are often asked to help with art handling and installation. Shippers and Handlers who want to learn best practice in the gallery and museum environment. It will also appeal to artists and students wishing to learn the fundamentals required to work as a technician.

Tutor

Adam Holmes-Davies

Adam Holmes-Davies is a London-based visual artist and specialist art technician with over 13 years’ experience working across museums, galleries and international touring exhibitions. He currently works with Barbican Immersive as a specialist art handler and maintains a freelance practice supporting leading UK arts institutions.

Adam has delivered technical consultancy on exhibition display and mounting, including previous work as an Exhibition Specialist at the Natural History Museum, where he trained in best practice for collection care and preventive conservation. His clients have included Somerset House, Saatchi Gallery, Galerie Kamel Mennour and De Beers.

Alongside his technical work, Adam maintains an active studio practice in East London and has exhibited nationally and internationally. He holds an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design. Contact: adam.holmesdavies@gmail.com or on instagram: @adamholmesdavies

Scott Miles

Scott Miles is a professional art technician, tutor, and visual artist. He currently works as a consultant and specialist in picture hanging and the installation of art and antiques, working with clients and interior designers in the private and commercial sectors throughout the United Kingdom. He also works as an art technician for a wide variety of commercial, community, institutional and educational galleries and museums throughout London. Scott is a graduate of the Turps Painting Programme in South London, where he also now works to help oversee their gallery and studio program exhibitions.

Scott has previously worked as Gallery Co-ordinator at the Victorian College of the Arts and with the University of Melbourne Art Collection in Australia, where he was trained in best practice methods for collection care and preventative conservation across works on paper, paintings, textiles, objects and antiquities collections. He has over 8 years experience as a tutor in Fine Art in Melbourne Universities. Scott has a studio practice based in East London and has exhibited his own work in Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Iceland, Norway and the United Kingdom.
