Art and Ageing, Disability and Mental Health Online Short Course

Course description

Art and ethics are seen by some as intrinsically linked while by others as mutually exclusive. Regardless of where you sit on this debate it can be argued that because art moves us, it can also challenge our views. At a time where sensitivity and understanding of disability, ageing, neurodiversity and mental health are central to our lives, the contribution of artists such as Yinka Shonibare, Nan Goldin and Marna Clarke is pivotal. In this course you will gain a critical overview of the role art, artists and arts institutions in challenging and shaping the beliefs of our society as well as the ethical responsibilities they face. You will explore these themes through personal assignments gaining feedback from your tutor and peers.

Throughout this four week course you will gain an overview of the history of art and social change, developing an understanding of current themes and debates around the responsibilities of artists and art institutions today. You will explore and research debates around ageing, disability, mental health, neurodiversity and power relations in art. Upon successful completion you will be able to demonstrate a series of clearly identified and focused research topics relating to art and ethics, with special focus on disability, neurodiversity, mental health and ageing. You will be able to identify and evaluate relevant sources and literature and collect relevant data and apply critical theory in the analysis of debates and issues relating to art and ethics. You will gain confidence in presenting well researched and sustained arguments in an appropriate form.
