Course overview

It's crucial for interior stylists to have an awareness of historical and classic styles and understand how they can be reworked to produce current trends. In this course you'll explore historical and iconic interior styles, and how they can provide you with inspiration for creating contemporary interiors.

By the end of the course you'll have explored different design periods and gained an insight into how relevant and influential they are on contemporary design.

  • Different interior styles, their inspiration, the furniture design and the patterns and colours of each era: Art Deco, English Classic 18th Century, French 18th Century Rococo, English Country House, 20th Century Modern, Bohemian, Shaker
  • Visual lectures will clarify the unique properties of each genre and its historical context
  • A study trip to an example in London and the tutor will provide students with recommended places to visit
  • Ways styles can be adapted to create a contemporary interior
  • Trends and how classic styles can inform current fashion and marketing

Materials

  • Magazines - these will be used for research and some will be supplied but students may want to bring in their own inspirational issues
  • Students may want to use their own laptop or tablet for research, plus a memory stick for digital photos
  • Projects will be presented on A1/A2/A3 mount boards, basic colours only will be supplied
  • Scalpel and ruler, pencils, notebook, will be useful for the course
  • Students will require a valid travel card for the bus or tube on the external outing
