Art Direction For Film Short Course

Course description

You will explore key aspects of screen design, from script analysis and interpretation, to researching skills, development of concepts, design approaches and finding interesting ways of presenting ideas.

You will finish the course with an introductory knowledge of the skills required by the film industry such as spatial awareness, model making and technical drawing.

In addition, the course will give you an insight into the processes involved in a working art department.

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older who are competent in written and spoken English.

Topics covered

  • Rather than accepting easy conventional solutions,the emphasis of this course is on developing your own interpretation through exploration and experimentation in response to a narrative.
  • In order to facilitate this, participants will be asked to bring homework in progress to each class, so that they can develop their own ideas and skills base.
  • It is also important that participants engage with group discussions in order to fully benefit from the course.
  • You can also expect to spend some time watching examples of films.

  • Magazines - e.g. interior, fashion, design
  • Scissors
  • Glues - UHU, PVA, stick
  • Drawing materials - pens and pencils
  • Materials to create colour - pastels and/or paint and/or pens
  • Metal ruler
  • Scaled ruler (1:25)
  • Scalpel/craft knife
  • Cutting mat
  • Tablet/laptop
