What is Specialist Study Skills Support?
The aim of Specialist Study Skills Sessions is to help you understand how you learn best. It can give you space to explore your learning needs and strengths. It helps you to develop effective study strategies and manage your course more efficiently.
The sessions are 1 to 1. They are usually an hour long. They are available Monday to Friday and can be online or in person at college sites.
Specialist Study Skills topics
The support is tailored to your needs, and the Specialist Study Skills Tutor will negotiate the content with you. The tutor will review and evaluate how the sessions are going for you periodically.
These are common strategies and topics that students ask for:
- Understanding assignments, breaking down complex assignment questions into manageable chunks.
- Preparation and practice for presentations.
- Assignment planning and structuring techniques for improved organization.
- Academic writing, e.g.
- Structuring and drafting essays.
- Improving critical, analytical and reflective writing techniques.
- Strategies for editing work and improving accuracy.
- Reading and research strategies.
- Time management and organisational strategies.
Specialist study skills support is not subject-specific and does not include a proofreading service.
Accessing Specialist Study Skills
You need to:
- Be registered with the Disability Service.
- Be referred for Specialist Study Skills Support by your Disability Adviser.

Who are Specialist Study Skills Tutors?
Specialist Study Skills Tutors are:
- Qualified in teaching students with Autism and Specific Learning Differences e.g. dyslexia, ADHD.
- Not course subject specialists. They cannot advise you on what you should be writing about in your assignments.
- Able to work with students to overcome the barriers to learning.
How to book
Once you’ve been referred for Specialist Study Skills Support you can book sessions.
To book:
- phone the Disability Service on +44 (0) 20 7514 6156 or
- email disability@arts.ac.uk
If you leave a voicemail, please include your name, student ID and phone number and someone will call you back within 3 working days.
A Disability Administrator will book one or two sessions for you and confirm the details via email.
You can book more sessions directly with your tutor, or by contacting the Disability Service again.
Making the most of your sessions
It is helpful to:
- Think about what you want help with.
- Bring your assignment brief or work you have done that you want to focus on.
- Make sure you continue to work between sessions.
- Arrive on time and keep your appointments.
Your first session
Your tutor will:
- Discuss your support needs with you and set goals for what you want to achieve by attending the sessions.
- Begin working with you on one of the areas you want to focus on.
