Colouring Critique: an initiative and vibrant publication that examines and reimagines the feedback and tutorial experience, spotlighting and celebrating the creativity of Black fashion designers at UAL.
The origins of Colouring Critique
Launched by Huguette Tchiapi in January 2024 as a student research project at Central Saint Martins, Colouring Critique addresses the unique challenges Black UAL fashion students face when presenting culturally focused projects in tutorials and critiques. The initiative aims to bridge cultural gaps in feedback practices and positively impact the awarding gap within UAL's Fashion Programmes.
Celebrating cultural differences in feedback and mentorship at UAL
Colouring Critique focuses on creating pathways for tutors and students to navigate cultural differences, fostering an environment where these differences are acknowledged, respected, and incorporated into feedback practices. In addition it celebrates the work and heritage of both students and alumni, providing opportunities to showcase their art and perspectives across UAL.
Reimagining the critique process for Black students
The publication identifies, addresses and examines disparities in tutorial and critique experiences through research, workshops and panel discussions informed by direct input from students and staff. It offers a practical framework for educators and institutions, while highlighting the creativity and cultural narratives of Black UAL fashion students.
