A Night of Opera and Film: Earthquake Fundraiser

Join us for a collaborative evening of film and music between Royal Academy of Music and CSM students, fundraising for the ongoing recovery efforts in response to the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Opera will be performed by Ana-Maria Godoroja (Soprano), Paulo Cerqueira (Baritone), Andra Băcilă and Anelise Gâmulescu (Piano) alongside films exploring themes of surrealism, spiritualism, landscape and the body by Charles Jimenez, Ela Kazdal, Ellen Dunne, Grace Baggott, Isabel Paget, Jemima de Jonge, Theodore Broughton.

There is a suggested donation of £3 per person which you can donate to hereDonations will also be taken at the door and will go to the grassroots organisation KAF Kolektif in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey.

KAF Kolektif are a Grassroots organisation formed in the Kahramanmaraş to provide immediate aid to those affected by the earthquakes in south-eastern Turkey. In the immediate aftermath, they built toilets and a field kitchen where hot meals were prepared and served. With support from volunteers and NGOs, the project has expanded with a workshop, a playground, temporary cinema, a social area for adults and an improved supply chain and sanitary systems.

Performing artists

Ana-Maria Godoroja

Ana is a Romanian lyrical soprano studying in her third year at The Royal Academy of Music, trained by Mary Nelson and coached by James Baillieu. In 2019, she received an Honourable Mention for her ability to sustain subito piano in Rachmaninoff’s Lilacs at the Remember Enescu International Competition. She performed at Academie Internationale d’Ete de Nice, Romanian Atheneum, National University of Music Bucharest and many more prestigious venues. Godoroja has a clear awareness of physicality combined with a creative drive and secure technique.

Paulo Cerqueira

Paulo Cerqueira began his studies at the Escola de Música Nossa Senhora do Cabo, Linda-a-Velha at the age of 6, as a violin student. Having been a part of the “Opera Workshop” at EMNSC for 4 years, he has performed a variety of solo roles such as; Alfio, Cavalleria Rusticana-P. Mascagni; Grimbald, Cold Genius, Eólo, King Arthur-H. Purcell. He made his opera debut with the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa as Belcore in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore at the age of 17. He performed in a variety of halls across Portugal and the United Kingdom such as; Centro Cultural de Belém, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Palácio dos Aciprestes, Palácio da Ajuda, Fórum Luísa Todi, Europarque, Aula Magna, and Angela Burgess Recital Hall.

Anelise Gămulescu

Described by Romanian critics on national radio as "an exceptional pianist with a refined sound", Anelise is currently an undergrad student at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with pianist Florian Mitrea. Having started playing the piano at 3 years old, she has won numerous international youth competitions in Romania, especially the Grand Prize "Ina Macarie" at only 13 years old in Italy. Her most recent achievement is the Second Prize in the Orbetello International Piano Competition. She has given performances in many halls, including Cadogan Hall (UK), Théâtre Municipal (France) ARCUB and Romanian Atheneum (Romania).

Andra Băcilă

Andra Bacila is a classical pianist from Romania in her first year at the Royal Academy of Music under Professor Joanna MacGregor. After receiving a full scholarship, she had her solo recital at the Liszt Institute (Balassi Institute) in Paris, a performance at the Embassy of Switzerland sponsored by Arthur Mattli and at the Embassy of Prague in London with Daisy Noton in the presence of Semyon Bychkov. In 2022, she won numerous competitions such as; the Hungarian Music Festival, International Moscow Music Online Competition and Future Stars International Piano Competition - in which she won a bursary of 76,000 USD at the East Tennessee State University Creative Arts. She performed as a soloist at the Romanian Atheneum, Goethe Institut, ARCUB, the Hungarian Liszt Institut and Romanian National Philharmonic in Brasov.
