Open call: design a new window mural for CSM

Project Background

The College Executive Group is moving to a new office in January 2024, ground floor C003, embedding themselves in the heart of the CSM community. The space will also be used by other senior academic and administrative staff, as well as UAL staff and visitors. 

Select areas on the office walls are being hung with artworks (print, painting, photographic and sculptural). The works selected are a combination of loans from the CSM Museum and Study Collection, photographic editorial images, and some art and design works loaned and/or purchased from recent graduates. The aim is to celebrate the rich history and diversity of the college community and practice.

In addition to the artworks on display we would like to commission an original window design, to unify, screen and enliven the main co-working space. The selected design, rendered in sustainable cut vinyl material, should illustrate the rich history and diversity of the college; whilst platforming and celebrating the breadth of cultural histories and practices being created in the college.

Objective and Deliverables

Design and deliver an original and celebratory window ‘mural’ design. The design should take inspiration from the CSM Museum and Study Collection and other historical and visual references from across the college. The design should be developed to run across the co-working office window and visually translate when looked at from both sides of the glass. The design should not obscure or cover the entire window. The subject matter could be rendered and designed as pictorial, illustrative, abstract, typographic, part-photographic, translucent or solid colour, linear or dot, or a combination thereof.  

The selected design should be delivered, following the template provided (showing window dimensions) as a series of digital files (illustrator) which need to be produced, incorporating the full window design. The files will be sent to a signage company for vinyl cutting and supervised application/installation.

£ 600 fee – paid via Arts Temps.

Itemised as the initial design delivery, with a modest number of additional hours (0.5 days) for overseeing installation in the space.
