As part of our commitment to Freedom of Expression at UAL, we’ve created some guidance below which sets out ways in which everyone can display messages and ideas in University space, in an inclusive and respectful way.
UAL guidance for posters and other printed materials
At UAL, we are committed to promoting freedom of expression on campus (which incorporates freedom of speech and academic freedom). Freedom of expression is fundamental to the effective exploration of arts education and the value we place on diverse opinions, experiences, and perspectives within our community. Our overarching policy is set out in our Code of Practice on Freedom of Expression.
There are many places across campus that have been designated for the safe display of posters that will not damage UAL property or disrupt normal operations.
When displaying printed posters and other printed promotional material (e.g. banners, stickers and flyers) on campus we ask that:
- They should only be displayed in designated spaces, as specified across our various sites.
- Posters should be taken down after 30 calendar days.
- All materials should refrain from containing unlawful language, images, or symbols.
- You do not cover, deface or graffiti on any posters or property. Posters should only be removed by the poster owner or members of UAL staff.
- Posters should not feature the UAL brand or logo without permission of the university.
By adhering to these guidelines, we aim to cultivate a campus culture where diverse perspectives can thrive within a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.
Any materials failing to follow this guidance will be promptly removed.
Who to contact
We reserve the right to take appropriate action in response to any behaviour that threatens the safety or disrupts the operations of our community.
If you have any feedback or suggestions regarding the use of posters or printed materials in UAL space, please contact estateshelpdesk@arts.ac.uk or you can report concerns using Tell Someone.
Events posters
If you are advertising an event on campus, please ensure you have followed the events planning guidelines: notifying the University, undertaking health and safety and risk assessments and putting in place mitigations where needed to ensure events are well managed.
Please see our Assessment of Events for more information.
