Thank you to everyone who came to see the Language-Art Project exhibition at CSM (10 - 12 December 2019), presented as part of our 'Who do we think we are?' Academic Support week.

The aim of the exhibition was to bring students together from across UAL, to reflect on the concept of 'language' and to create artwork in response. Language can of course be beautiful, crazy, fascinating and maddening - sometimes all at once! The project proved a valuable opportunity for students to meet one another and to share insights on this rich topic. Our group was truly diverse: cross-nationality, cross-discipline and cross-college, with levels ranging from Foundation through to Postgraduate.

Of the 12 artworks displayed, some were collaborative efforts, while others were solo - and in a variety of media. The individual works all approached the theme of 'language' from a fascinating range of perspectives. These included:

  • combining text and image to create new impacts
  • word play
  • exploring incomprehension
  • celebrating the possibilities that language brings us

"It was eye-opening to hear about how others work in their creative practices and courses ... [this project] brought you out of your own course/campus to show/work in other campuses so this was new and exciting. It was overall a very fun experience because the work could be so open." - Yulin Huang, Student of BA Fine Art: Painting at Wimbledon College of Art, Participant in the Language-Art Project

We hope that this event can be a pilot for future, similar projects. If anyone has any suggestions for how we can take the idea forward, please contact Karen Harris (on the International Student Experience team) at k.harris@arts.ac.uk.

In the meantime, watch our short video for a flavour of the exhibition.
