Every October, we take time to celebrate the culture, creativity and strength of our Black students, staff, alumni and partners, as well as acknowledge the important historic contribution of the Black community to mark Black History Month (BHM). Keep up-to-date with our upcoming BHM events, news and more by exploring our new BHM webpage.
Throughout the month, we will mark the occasion through:
- Staff and student events, including exhibitions, BHM inspired menus across UAL canteens, book displays across our libraries and more
- Spotlighting members of our UAL community through profiles
- Showcasing student work
- Sharing resources
If you would like to contribute to the Black visionaries wall or contribute to our BHM celebration in any way please email studentcomms@arts.ac.uk
We’ll also be shouting out people from the Black community who have influenced, inspired and made a positive impact, so keep an eye out on our Instagram stories to take part and use #UALBHM if you take pictures at any of our events.
Our libraries will also present a display of books on Black History Month throughout October.
Time for Change: Action Not Words
While celebrating Black communities at UAL and beyond, we also want to use this time to spread awareness and understanding of the impact of Black heritage and culture nationwide.
This year’s theme for BHM is ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words’. To align with this theme during BHM and beyond, we are:
- Working to implement our Antiracism strategy
- Increasing the diversity of our students
- Developing a permanent Black Creatives hub, following on from our BHM webpage, which will serve as a support and resources page for our Black students, alumni, staff and allies who want to learn more about Black history as well as showcasing our Black community at UAL
