Friday 20 March marks the beginning of Nowruz, the Persian New Year. Beginning on the first day of the Persian calendar, during the Persian month of Farvardin, Nowruz is celebrated in many countries and is a celebratory time.

What is Nowruz?

Nowruz is a combination of the Persian words نو (now, meaning 'new') and روز (ruz, 'day'). It is a significant celebration for many cultures across Central Asia, South Asia and the Middle East. It is important because it marks the start of a new year and the arrival of spring, symbolising renewal, hope, and new beginnings.

How is Nowruz celebrated?

Nowruz celebrations can vary across countries and cultures, but core elements spanning them all are the theme of renewal, family gatherings and festive meals.

To extend your well wishes to fellow students or academics who might be celebrating Nowruz, you can say "Happy Nowruz!" or "Nowruz Mubarak" (which means "blessed Nowruz").

Happy Nowruz to those in the UAL community who are celebrating!
