Creative Shift: Secure the Bag!

Creative Shift’s Secure the Bag programme is a series of drop-in workshops aimed at supporting you to make money from your creativity and manage your finances during uncertain times.

The ‘Cost of Living Crisis’ is affecting different people in different ways, and these workshops are designed with students from underrepresented backgrounds in mind, with the aim to acknowledge and address some of the issues that may be affecting you.

This workshop series forms part of our wider offer around making money from your creativity  

With opportunities to unpack your personal money mindsets and strategies to build better money habits, this programme aims to focus on the things that are within your control and help move you into a space of empowerment and proactivity, supported by an encouraging community!

Practical know-how, tools and resources are provided by our expert industry specialists. Topics and speakers include:

How to make money from your creative skills

How to generate multiple income streams and free up your time to work on other things, as well as free and low cost platforms and resources to set up shop online.

Led by Kei Maye, a Creative Consultant, Educator and the Founder of the platform: Creative Champs

How to manage your money like a Boss!

How to make a budget and stick to it, setting and saving towards your financial goals and how to have fun without breaking the bank.

Led by Timi Merriman-Johnson, a financial content creator, podcaster and founder of Mr Money Jar.

Master your mind to master your money

Learn strategies and methods that takes into account your personal money habits and behaviours, so that you can make better financial decisions!

Led by Krystle McGilvery, a Behavioral Finance Consultant, Writer, Neurodiversity Advocate and founder of Mind Over Money.

Creative Shift aims to shape diversity in the creative industries and strives for more equitable futures for all.

We focus on working with students from underrepresented backgrounds and our programmes are aimed at students that meet the following criteria, in line with UAL’s Access and Participation Plan:

You must currently be a:

  • Home (UK) student
  • Studying on an undergraduate degree course at UAL (or have graduated in the last 2 years)
  • AND one or more of the following statements apply to you:
  • I am a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (B.A.M.E)* student.
  • I took part in the UAL Insights programme.
  • I am disabled according to the Equality Act 2010.
  • I am a care leaver (I have been in the Care System)
  • My parent(s)/ guardian(s) have not completed a University Degree.
  • I receive the UAL bursary.
  • I have caring responsibilities (i.e I am a parent, or am the primary care giver for a child/children, disabled person/s or elderly family member.)

*We acknowledge that the term Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) is contested. Whilst there is no consensus view on alternative terminology, we welcome ideas and feedback on this debate.
