The UAL Awarding Body team experienced a day in the life of the students taking their Creative Media Production and Technology qualifications at their recent staff development day at Global Academy. After seeing first-hand some of the exciting projects the students are working on, the team got involved in an interactive broadcast engineering workshop with Rise Up Academy.

The day was designed not only to help the team gain a better understanding of what students experience on our courses, but also to understand how centres deliver our qualifications. The day began with introductions from the Global Academy team, followed by a tour of the campus where staff were able to gain insight into the projects the students have been working on throughout the year.

Jonathan Jacob, Director of Specialism at Global Academy, said:

"We had a fantastic day hosting colleagues from UAL Awarding Body at Global Academy. It was great to share ideas, creative thinking and approaches to their qualifications as well as giving them a taste of what life is like for media students at Global!"

The team then had the exciting opportunity to take part in a hands-on workshop facilitated by Rise Up Academy, an outreach programme delivering broadcast engineering and technical workshops to primary and secondary school children aged 9 through to 18 years old. UAL Awarding Body staff were tasked with building a 4 camera studio and gallery, putting their teamwork and determination to the test! The workshop was a huge success, and resulted in the team running their own gameshow in the space.

Rise Up Academy’s intention is to inspire, educate and inform children and young adults about the pathways and career opportunities available to them within the broadcast technology industry, with the hopes of ensuring a more diverse workforce.

Reflecting on the day, UAL Awarding Body’s Engagement and Experience Manager, Caz Owen, said:

"Our team had a fantastic afternoon participating in a Rise Up Academy workshop - equal levels informative and fun!

The behind the scenes element was fascinating, with the volunteers sharing their wealth of experience and industry stories with us. Getting to quite literally 'plug in' to a 'live' TV studio was a unique opportunity that gave us a hands-on taste of the great skills our students learn while studying our qualifications and preparing for their futures in the creative industries.

The collaborative nature of the tasks in such an unusual environment made it a brilliant team building activity, allowing individuals to step outside of their comfort zones. It will be one that will be remembered and talked about for some time I'm sure! Thank you Rise Up!"

Thank you again to the Global Academy team and Rise Up Academy for such an insightful day. Take a look at some photographs from the day below.
