Biography

Alexander Whitley is an award-winning choreographer whose exploration of digital technology has placed him at the forefront of innovation in contemporary dance. His multi-disciplinary practice, focusing on the use of motion-tracking and interactive technology, spans stage, installation, film, and immersive platforms.

Alexander has held affiliations with the UK’s most respected dance institutions including Sadler’s Wells, the Royal Ballet and Rambert, and has created work for many of the UK’s leading companies.

In 2014, he founded the Alexander Whitley Dance Company, now internationally acclaimed as an artist-led creative studio who have been redefining the boundaries of dance through pioneering work with digital technology. They produce work across stage, screen, immersive and interactive platforms, combining physical and digital elements to create unique movement-based experiences. Their productions have toured theatres around the world and have been presented at festivals including London Film Festival, South by South West and Romaeuropa.

Alexander has regularly brought his expertise into higher education, lecturing at the Bartlett School of Architecture and London College of Fashion among others. In 2024 he launched the Digital Body Festival, a new event in East London celebrating the intersection of the moving body and digital technology. Since 2025 he has been a Governor of The Royal Ballet Company.
