Short course
Accessible Book Design Online Short Course
Course description
Course overview
Taught through a combination of lectures, demonstrations and practical exercises, this short course guides you through the process of designing and creating a compelling and inclusive print and eBook from start to finish.
You’ll learn a fresh workflow based around the industry standard page layout software Adobe InDesign, as well as Microsoft Word with unique custom-made software tools to help quickly identify, prepare and adapt new and existing content.
Tutors will share the latest methods for preparing professional print-ready artwork whilst also preparing the content and design in a way that is ready for accessible, digital use.
Following the course, you will be able to generate print-ready production files to industry standard, whilst also preparing the same content on the same page for consistent accessible eBook export.
Who this course is for
Beginners and experienced InDesign users are welcome. For experienced InDesign users this course is a chance to brush up your skills and learn the latest practices for digital production and accessibility using the most recent version of InDesign.
Our experienced tutors will get everyone up to speed by clearly introducing each aspect as they teach the recommended way of working.
This is a technical course but is not intended to be a coding course. We use a no-code/low-code approach and eBooks are exported using software tools (not hand coding). Some experience/confidence in working with digital files is recommended.

IMPORTANT - Adobe ID Login for Short Course Students
Students will need to create an account with Adobe (unless you already have one) to access the Adobe suite at the college – instructions are included below. You'll need to use a personal email address to create this. If you already have an account with Adobe, please make sure you bring your login details with you on the first day of the course.
Please note:
- Creating an Adobe account is free
- The software will only be accessible when logged into a UAL networked computer
- The same account can be used outside of the University, but software will only be accessible through a personal paid subscription that students will need to set up independently
- You can still create an account on the day but doing this beforehand will save time and avoid delays to the start of the class
- If you already have an Adobe ID/subscription you can use this on your short course rather than setting up a new account
To create an account students will need to:
- Go to Adobe Sign in page
- Select 'Create an account'
- Enter your details and select 'Create account'
