Course overview

Podcasts - the downloadable audio shows that people subscribe to and enjoy on their devices - have revolutionised how we share ideas, establish our voices in the public sphere and create communities.

Taught through a combination of short presentations, practical exercises and discussions, this 3-day course provides a practical insight into the field of podcasting. The course focuses exclusively on audio podcasting, covering the essential formats and production techniques across different styles. Students will explore their personal connection to podcasting, defining their unique voice and purpose as content creators.

During the course, students explore the practical processes of podcast production and gain an understanding of accessible tools and methods for creating engaging audio content. We’ll cover planning, creation, episode building and publishing, as well as how to develop a host persona to establish an authentic connection with listeners and reflect your unique perspective.

Students will build a solid foundation in audio editing by learning the basics of Audacity, a free and accessible editing programme that provides all the essential tools needed to produce professional-sounding podcast episodes. The course offers the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of podcast creation, from planning and recording to editing and distribution. There will be personalised guidance throughout, with feedback and advice tailored to each student’s specific goals and background. 

This course is computer room based and offers home recording techniques. Students may want to bring a microphone if they have one.
