Earlier this year, set designer and MA Theatre Design graduate Hugo Aguirre was selected to be a contestant on the brand-new Sky Arts series, The Big Design Challenge.

Hosted by Lauren Laverne, the programme is a search for Britain's next design superstar. Over 5 episodes, 8 top creatives working across all forms of design compete to put their problem-solving abilities and creative flair to the test through a range of challenges.

We caught up with Hugo to find out more about his journey in the competition.

Can you tell us more about your experience on the show and the projects you had to work on?

Coming into the show, I knew I would be out of my comfort zone for most of the challenges, and that terrified me - but that was also why I did it! The whole thing was such a unique experience.

Each week, we were given a challenge to work on individually, within a team or in pairs. There were fewer than 2 days to complete the task, which was intense. These challenges ranged from designing outdoor sculptures and lamps, to chairs, time pieces and more – a lot of which were new areas for me.

What was your biggest challenge from the show? How did studying MA Theatre Design help prepare you?

We all had moments of self-doubt and felt a big pressure to do well on the big screen – but I learned not to take it too seriously, and just focused on enjoying the process and making something I could be proud of.

For our final brief on the show, we were asked to create a design for techno duo Orbital – and I finally got to showcase my stage design skills. Studying MA Theatre Design really helped in my favour, as I had previous experience on the course working with speculative design for large-scale concerts.

I was able to apply everything I had learned in practice, which allowed me to showcase my ability and progress to the final stage of the competition. It was a proud moment having the guest judges recognise and appreciate your work!

In Episode 3 the contestants created a table top and hanging light that was also a plant pot. The light was inspired by one of the rooms in the restaurant Sketch in London.

The timepiece challenge design in Episode 4 was a design inspired by the movement of a lunar eclipse and used the darkest black paint in the world made by artist Stuart Semple.
