Camberwell’s BA Illustration class of 2016 have made an ingenious start to their graduate show fundraising activities by brewing their own beer. With the help of Late Knights brewery in Penge our 2016 students have created ‘The Exhibitionists’, a lychee- and lime-infused India Pale Ale (IPA) which is now available in multiple locations across south London.

The idea for the project originated during a Printmaking class at Camberwell last year and student Jessica Knights used her connections with the brewery to bring the project to life. Influenced by a mango-infused IPA once sampled at popular student spot, Stormbird in Camberwell, the group wanted to create something slightly unusual. Taking inspiration from Penge high street market stalls, they happened across a winning lychee and lime combination. Once the flavours were selected, brew testing started, with the final product being enhanced and developed over the past four months.

Students have also put their illustration and design skills to the test, creating labels and promotional packages for the product. Opening the label design up through a competition within the class, the Late Knights Brewery team then selected the final design which has now been put into production.

‘The Exhibitionists’ is currently stocked in the following locations: The London Beer Dispensary & Mr Lawrence Wine Merchant (Brockley), Peckham Beer Rebellion, Hop Burns and Black & The Flying Pig (East Dulwich), The Beer Shop (Nunhead), The Larder (Ladywell), Good Taste & Beer Rebellion (Crystal Palace).

A launch night for ‘The Exhibitionists’ is being held on Friday 28 August 2015 at The Old Nun’s Head in Nunhead, forming part of the pub’s bank holiday beer festival.

Alongside this venture, our BA Illustration 2016 students are holding bi-monthly edition markets at Peckham Pelican. ‘Signed and Numbered’ features varied work including ceramics, prints, political zines and everything in-between with artwork sales contributing to their degree show fund.

If these fundraising efforts are anything to go by, we can’t wait to see what’s in store from our other Undergraduate students next year.
