Queenie Clarke is a BA Drawing graduate from Camberwell College of Arts. We caught up with her to speak about what she is doing now, including winning The Vanguard Prize.
It’s been a few months since you moved into the studio, tell us briefly what you have been working on.
During the time so far I have been working towards a interactive sculpture by making models and drawings on Sketchup. I have also taken part in an exhibition (with former Drawing students) where I made a publication about a potential site specific sculpture that I hope to build soon.
The Vanguard Prize is a fantastic opportunity for any graduate, how do you feel it has helped you transition between life at college and establishing your practice independently?
It has helped by being so instantaneous, it hasn’t given me much time to pause from finishing university which I think is important as it has kept up the momentum.
Tell us about a highlight of your time at Vanguard Court so far.
The people I have been meeting, there are some really brilliant artists and designers and I feel really lucky to be working so close to them.
Do you have any advice for future Camberwell Drawing students?
Don’t feel stuck in working two dimensionally, keep pushing your ideas by experimenting – have fun with it.
What’s next … tell us about your plans for 2016.
I am going to start building the sculptures I have been planning for and then hoping to exhibit them in March time.
