Bilbao has launched a programme of 2021 summer courses open to the city’s public, hosted jointly by 3 of the city’s universities - University of the Basque Country, University of Deusto, IED Kunsthal - and UAL.

Three of UAL’s Colleges, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication and London College of Fashion will co-teach the Summer Schools alongside academics from Bilbao universities, exploring topics relevant to the region and globally: design and the silver economy; photographing with communities and fashion law and management.

UAL has a formal city partnership with Bilbao, working with the office of the Mayor of Bilbao Juan Mari Aburto. Our collaboration with Bilbao spans teaching, research, KE and creative leadership, working together with the city to develop the Bilbao’s arts and culture, positioning it as an international hub for the creative industries.

Fashion Law and Management
28 June - 1 July

The fashion industry is going through significant change due to globalisation and the impact of new technologies. Fashion is recognised as one of the pillars of a nation’s identity, with dynamic and innovative firms that have become powerful economic drivers. As the sector becomes increasingly complex, it needs sophisticated and professional advice. This course brings together leading international experts from the business and legal domains, fashion professionals in established brands, start-ups, fashion and entrepreneurship students and those in the legal sector who wish to expand their knowledge in the legal and business dimensions of the fashion industry.

Product Design and Silver Economy: ecologies of action
5 - 9 July

This IED Kunsthal and Chelsea course focuses on how the concerns and actions of older citizens can inform meaningful design proposals. It will particularly consider how everyday activities can be improved, reconsidered, and enriched in a variety of contexts. This approach enables participants to generate and conceive appropriately and meaningfully designed artifacts and structures. The programme will cover age-friendly cities, feeling at home anywhere and connecting people.
