As part of our Life At Chelsea series we caught up with MA Textile Design student Michaela Smith, to see how her learning experience at Chelsea has shaped her practice.
“During my MA at Chelsea I have been able to refine my style in printed design as well as develop my graphic design skills.
“I have been working on a collection of designs made from 100% plastic bottles that are suitable for the everyday adventurer, aiming to bridge the gap between consumers and the environment through the exploration of surface pattern. My influences and inspiration for my work has primarily focused on mass plastic pollution and the implications it has on the environment.
“My tutor, Bridget Harvey has been a great inspiration to me as she is so knowledgeable and helps you to break down your research and make a large topic much more approachable. My class mates have also been a great support network.
“Chelsea’s studio access has been ideal and completely essential for a practice-based course, having this space really allows you to develop your practice throughout the year.
“Living in London with everything on my doorstep means that I have endless inspiration and groups to get involved in, many of which were within my research field. This made my research personal and thorough. Having access to other college library resources at UAL and being part of a wider network has been great.
“This year I took part in a competition with Zara where we had to design a kidswear capsule collection and as a result I was highly commended and had an interview with Zara’s design team.
“My ambitions are to keep creating awareness through design and to take the research and knowledge that I have gained throughout the year into companies, where we can look at making the high street more sustainable and affordable for the everyday consumer. In return this will positively impact the environment.
“For anyone thinking of studying MA Textile Design sustainability is key, really think about what it is you would like to change through your research and come with enthusiasm as you’ll be studying it for a whole year!
