Steffy-Luise Dyer tells us about her experience of studying BA Fine Art during our undergraduate summer show, where her work features until this Saturday 24 June.
Where are you from?
Essex, England.
Describe your experience at Chelsea in 3 words
Insightful, the start.
Please tell us about what your final show.
The work is a giant wooden loom suspended in the air by steel wires. Attached to one end of the loom is a weave that will hang down to the floor, creating a wall of rye knots suspended in space.
It’s a continuously evolving piece. I used recycled materials only, displayed in a way that evidences the making process. The materials are untouched. No dirt has been removed and nothing is hidden from the viewer.
What was your greatest challenge so far in working towards the degree show?
Working out how to suspend such a large object as it was my first time doing so, but the team and workshop staff have been so helpful with giving me guidance and pointing me into the right direction.
What do you see yourself doing after you graduate, what are your career ambitions?
I will be attending MA Textile Design in September 2017, continuing my artistic practice in contemporary textile art. In the future I hope to work with textiles, whether it be interior or as a freelance artist myself.
What have you enjoyed most about studying at Chelsea?
Meeting the people. I think back to my foundation year and remember having the choice of many places to go to, but Chelsea feels like home. The people I met and the tutors being so friendly has made the experience so enjoyable.
What have you most enjoyed about the area around Chelsea? Any tips?
I have enjoyed being so close to the embankment/Millbank you forget how close you are to everything you need in London. Everything is a short walk or a quick journey on London transport. We really do have easy access to everything we need in London. Oh, and also Tate Britain is just across the road!
What would you say to someone who is thinking about doing your course? Any advice?
Do it, just prepare yourself to really find your practice. I go back to my old collage to give talks and always recommend Chelsea, we have such a diverse range of works and amazing workshops.
