The Undergraduate and Graduate Diploma Show at Chelsea College of Arts took place from 17 – 25 June 2022. It was the first time following 2 years of pandemic restrictions that we welcomed family, friends and the general public back into our buildings to celebrate the work of our graduating students.
Looking back to the Show, we caught up with BA Product and Furniture Design graduating student Eliot Everton, whose final showcase submission is titled Hands On With Eliot W. Everton.
Elliot is a multi-disciplinary designer and maker of jewellery, furniture and other products. In his own words he is ‘driven by a passion for unique stories that make designs all that bit more special.
For the Undergraduate and Graduate Diploma Show in June, Hands On with Eliot W. Everton was on display in the Chelsea Marquee located in the Chelsea Parade Ground, alongside other graduating students’ work from BA Product and Furniture Design.
Eliot's project aims to support emerging creatives in a competitive industry, by diversifying the creative sector and making it more accessible for new artists. Eliot told us more about this work.
Eliot
“In the creative industries you see a lot of new creatives who are extremely passionate about their respected crafts and are exceptionally good at what they do, but often they have a level of naivety about the industry, which gets exploited or ends up with them being overlooked. Being guilty of this myself, I wanted to create a platform that gives new and emerging creatives a space to connect with their audience. Hands On is an interview series where I interview various new and emerging artists, designers and makers in their workshops and studios.”
“In this interview series I discuss with the artists how techniques, materials and disciplines have shaped who they are and how they work, acting to promote them and their disciplines. The series gives an insight into how they work and what makes their work so special, and, in each episode, I am shown a new skill or technique by my guests”
Hands on with Eliot Everton: Insights into the working mind of Florian Eisele - Episode 1
“Following the interviews, I use my background in jewellery to craft a unique and tailored ring that combines my skillsets with that of my guests in a coming together of disciplines, incorporating their craft, style, and personality into a final co-designed ring.”
“The pilot episode featuring fashion knitwear designer Florian Eisele aired on 16 June 2022, as part of the Undergraduate and Graduate Diploma Show.”
“With Florian, I was captivated by the machinery and tools he used. My final ring design is modelled on the knitting transfer pins used to transfer the yarns between hooks on the knitting machines. The ring also acts as a display piece for crochet samples, allowing the wearer to display their knit samples at fashion shows.”
“Now I am graduating from BA Product, and Furniture Design, I will miss the community at Chelsea College of Arts. Everyone is there for a similar purpose and the campus really encourages a friendly environment. You can meet people with similar mindsets, and everyone is open to collaborate.”
