Cara Huato joined Advanced Fashion Design Study Abroad at Central Saint Martins this summer. Cara is a student from the University of Oregon, studying Art and Product Design. She is also an entrepreneur, artist, and designer based in Eugene.

"Studying abroad in London was an incredible opportunity for me to meet like-minded people from around the world who challenged my perspectives and taught me new ways of looking at fashion."

My best memory of studying at Central Saint Martins (CSM) was the runway show. My favourite part about the classes was the continuous dialogue that was between the students, tutors and professors. It encouraged such a productive and intense creative process challenging me to become a more decisive and considered designer.

The fashion show overall was a great experience for me, the only part that was difficult was not knowing anything about my model or having an opportunity to do any fittings beforehand.

I chose to look at a lot of imagery surrounding architectural gradients, organic structures, and body modifications in my first days of research. This led me eventually to look into mobility aids and words such as gradient, fragility, modification, and protection. Mobility aids such as braces are often looked at as ugly. They accentuate the parts of our body that we don’t intend to emphasize, yet after looking closely at a lot of these devices I noticed that it wasn’t the devices that were ugly, but rather the way they were placed on the body often disregarding aesthetics and their intent to flatter figures. How can I show that volume, structure, and shape can be beautiful and fragile when more considered?

Why did you choose to study fashion?

I chose to study fashion because it has always been what I wanted to pursue. I have been passionate about clothing since my grandmother taught me how to sew at the age of 7.

How do you like studying abroad in London?

Studying abroad in London was an incredible opportunity for me to meet like-minded people from around the world who challenged my perspectives and taught me new ways of looking at fashion. I was able to meet some incredible friends and mentors who helped me have such an incredible experience.

What is your first impression of CSM?

CSM seemed like such a welcoming and experimental place to be. I immediately loved the creative diversity and encouraged artistic expression.

Why did you choose UAL Summer Study Abroad?

I chose to study at UAL because I really wanted to be in an atmosphere that encouraged more of the art side of fashion. I also found it to be the most financially accessible advanced fashion course offered in the world from my research.

How do you think this study abroad experience will help you in the future?

I see this experience having a large impact on my future. This was my first experience in the international world of fashion that really opened many doors to opportunities in the future and showed me clearer paths on how to pursue my dreams and goals.

Is there anything you want to share with other study abroad students/ future applicants?

I would say don’t worry about making friends or intimidating classes or professors. This was one of the easiest social experiences of my life they really do a great job selecting a group of diverse like-minded individuals. Also, it’s definitely worth it to bring some sewing supplies, I had to rebuy everything when I got here.
