The Complete Stylist is an extended 10-week short course delivered at London College of Fashion, with sessions held on Saturdays on campus and Wednesday evenings online. Designed for those looking to explore fashion styling in a professional capacity, the course supports students in building a portfolio, developing a creative identity, and gaining a clear understanding of the industry and its opportunities.
Whether participants are considering a career shift or just beginning their journey, the course introduces the fundamentals of styling—from fashion history and personal styling to on-set experience and creative direction. Students also benefit from access to London College of Fashion’s wider resources, including libraries, studio spaces and facilities across UAL, supporting both creative research and practical project work.
To understand the impact of the course, we spoke to students from a recent cohort about their experiences and how the programme has supported their next steps into the industry.
Chiara’s experience: building confidence, skills and direction
Chiara joined the course after spending her early career working in finance. She was looking to pivot into a more creative field and align her career with her long-standing interest in fashion styling.
Coming from a non-creative background, Chiara was drawn to the breadth of the course and its accessibility for beginners:
“I had never studied anything creative before, so this felt like a good starting point… it covered such a wide range of topics, from fashion history to personal styling.”
Over the duration of the course, students completed multiple photoshoots, each acting as both a creative exercise and a professional portfolio opportunity. For Chiara, these practical experiences were transformative:
“We’ve done four shoots across the course… by the end you realise how useful they are. They set you up to apply for junior stylist roles straight away.”
By the end of the course, students are equipped to apply for entry-level roles with relevant experience to support their applications. Alongside the course, Chiara began actively applying for roles and has already secured assistant styling opportunities:
“It’s gone hand in hand with looking for jobs. I’ve managed to get assisting roles while still studying.”
Learning the industry from the inside
The course goes beyond creative practice, equipping students with practical knowledge of how the industry operates. From understanding fashion history to learning on-set etiquette and assembling a professional styling kit, students gain a holistic view of the styling ecosystem. Students also develop an understanding of professional expectations on set—how to prepare, communicate, and contribute effectively—helping them feel confident and credible in real-world environments.
Teaching is led by an industry professional, with a collaborative and open approach:
“The teaching style is very open-minded. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and brings different ideas, and that’s incorporated into the learning.”
Students also receive guidance on entering the industry—from building a CV and portfolio to searching and applying for roles:
“We’ve gone through how to find jobs, what to search for, how to approach people… even which roles to apply for and why. It gave me a lot of confidence.”
Taking the next steps
As the course comes to an end, students leave with practical experience, professional connections, and a clearer sense of direction:
“I’m sad it’s ending because you get into a rhythm of shoots and making work… but now it’s about continuing independently.”
For those considering the course without a fashion background, Chiara’s advice is simple:
“You don’t need any experience. By the end, you’ll have a well-rounded understanding, a portfolio, and real on-set experience you can use to apply for jobs.”
Saskia’s experience: discovering direction and building confidence
Saskia joined the course during a gap year, using the time to explore her interests and gain clarity on a future career in fashion:
“I wasn’t sure which area of fashion I wanted to go into… I just wanted to immerse myself in something and see if it felt right as a career.”
Encouraged by a friend already studying at London College of Fashion, Saskia chose the Complete Stylist short course for its structure and duration, allowing her to fully immerse herself in the subject while developing practical skills over time.
Gaining clarity on her path in fashion styling
At the beginning of the course, Saskia describes feeling unsure about her direction:
“At the start, I didn’t really know what I was doing at all.”
Over the 10 weeks, that uncertainty shifted into confidence and clarity. Through a combination of practical experience and industry insight, she developed a stronger understanding of both the styling landscape and her place within it:
“I feel like I know so much more about the industry now, and I know how I’m going to make my next steps.”
Building a portfolio and personal style
Like many students on the course, Saskia’s portfolio development was a key outcome. Through multiple shoots and creative projects, she created a body of work she feels proud of:
“I’ve created lots of looks that I’m really proud of… and I’ve been working on putting them together in a strong portfolio.”
The course also helped her refine her personal aesthetic:
“I think I’ve discovered my own personal style at the same time. It’s really developed.”
With guidance from her tutor, she gained practical knowledge on how to present her work professionally:
“We were taught how to make a portfolio, which I’m excited to keep building on.”
Looking ahead
As she completes the course, Saskia is focused on continuing to build momentum:
“I’m going to keep working on shoots with friends to build my portfolio and then send it out to as many people as I can.”
“The course has enabled me to network organically with other students, but I also feel that I’ve developed key employability skills, including how to write a CV and cover letter, and how to approach and connect with industry professionals.”
