Specific health issues

Learn about some specific health issues that may affect you:

Seasonal Influenza ('flu')

Flu is a viral illness, cases of which become more common during the winter months. Check out the NHS advice on Flu.

Measles and mumps

There has been a substantial increase in the numbers of people getting measles and mumps. Students who were not given 2 doses of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination when they were younger are advised to contact their doctor’s practice.

Vaccinations

Review specific vaccinations you should consider as a student in the UK. This is based on information provided by the National Health Service (NHS).

Meningitis booster vaccinations

You should have had the MenACWY vaccine to prevent meningitis and septicaemia, which can be deadly.

You should check you’ve had this vaccination before coming to UAL. UK students are usually offered this vaccine in year 9 or 10 at school.

If you have missed this vaccination, or if you are an overseas student and your country hasn’t offered it, you can ask your GP to give it to you for free if you are aged 25 years or under.

Please get the vaccination before you arrive. If that's not possible you should have it  as soon as possible after you arrive - the greatest risk of catching these infections is in the first few weeks.
