Josef Murmann completed the UAL Creative Computing Institute Diploma last year and is now in his 3rd year of BA (Hons) Photography at Camberwell College of Arts. Josef is particularly interested in the physicality of the photographic image, and how it exposes the process of photography.
Here, Josef tells us what he liked most about studying at UAL Creative Computing Institute and talks us through his favourite project on the Diploma.
What first attracted you to the diploma and how has it developed your practice?
I wanted to gain skills that would allow me to explore computing projects within my practice. The Diploma seemed like a great opportunity to learn these new skills. Now, my practice has evolved to become more computing-based, and I now have the knowledge to create interesting work in this field.
What did you enjoy most about studying on the diploma at UAL CCI, and what do you feel you’ve gained?
The best part of the UAL CCI for me was making and sharing work with my peers, everyone is so talented and it’s exciting to see what people are making. I gained a lot of really useful skills such as being able to code. Even just having the ability to think computationally is very useful for everyday life.
The Diploma has given me a lot more direction in my work.
Tell me about your favourite piece of work that you did on the diploma
The best piece of work that came out of my diploma was a robotic scan line camera I built. I effectively built a CNC machine out of stepper motors, Arduino and an old etchasketch.
What is the CCI community like?
The UAL CCI community is the best part of the whole course. Unfortunately, Covid made it a bit harder to communicate but we still had quite a laugh in the group chat we made.
Everyone is there to help each other out. The tutors are lovely and offer great support!
What is your advice for anyone thinking of doing the diploma?
If you’re willing to put in the work to learn, its really the most valuable year of university you can do.
