Explore archives through drawing, observation and conversation in this hands-on workshop with UAL Archives and Special Collections Centre.

Free and open to all.

Join us for an in-person drawing workshop with the UAL Archives and Special Collections Centre.

Using objects from our special collections, we will explore how drawing can help us look closely, communicate differently, and think critically about how archives are described and understood.

Through a series of practical activities, we will consider what happens when information is passed on, changed or lost, and how this can shape the archival record.

No drawing experience is needed. All materials will be provided.

This workshop is for anyone interested in archives, including researchers, people looking after community collections, or anyone wanting to find out more about working with archival material.

During the session you will:

  • Explore drawing as a tool for observation and communication
  • Reflect on archival description, bias and loss
  • Handle original archival material
  • Become familiar with the Archives and Special Collections Centre
  • Find out how to access and use the ASCC collections

Tea and cake will be served!

Schedule:

  • 10:00am: Arrivals, tea & cake
  • 10:30am: Welcome and Intro to Archives and Special Collections at UAL
  • 10:45am-12:45pm: Drawing Workshops led by Lucy Parker, Assistant Archivist (inclusive of 15 min break)
  • 1:00pm [End]

This event is organised by the UAL Archives and Special Collections Centre.
