Course description

Course overview

This 10-week industry-focused course is designed to teach you current makeup techniques for beauty, red carpet, fashion editorial, catwalk , TV, and commercial work. You’ll build practical skills whilst learning how the industry operates and how to present yourself professionally across all platforms. Looking at the history of makeup and introducing you to the who’s who of the beauty world. Taught by working industry experts, this course offers a vital real-world insight and guidance to help you to find your feet and begin your career in makeup artistry.

During the course, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of makeup application such as skincare, hygiene and preparation, as well as the histories and theories behind makeup and how to create varying looks; from editorial and couture makeup.

In addition to practicing your new skills, you'll record your work and build a portfolio during a studio photoshoot with a professional photographer and hair stylist - allowing you to demonstrate the skills learnt during the course and put them into practice.

Previous students have forged successful careers in the makeup industry and gone on to assist on teams for some of the biggest makeup artists in the world, including Pat McGrath and Charlotte Tilbury for fashion week, and have been signed to various make up agencies in London. As this is a small group of students, there will be plenty of opportunity for one-to-one tutor advice on careers in the industry. You will also receive your own full set of brushes and a cosmetics makeup starter kit.

Payment plans

The Complete Makeup Short Course is eligible for a payment plan and must fit the following criteria to request:

  • The course start date must be at least 4 months away from booking
  • The course fee must be paid in full 4 weeks before course start date

A 50% deposit is due at the time of booking. The remaining balance is divided into 3 monthly payments, payable via Flywire. For example, if the course fee is GBP 4,450, 50% of this is due upon booking (GBP 2,225), followed by 3 monthly instalments of GBP 742 per month. Normal UAL Short Course T&Cs apply.

Materials

Everything needed to complete the course is provided, but please feel free to bring any materials you enjoy using and a notebook and pen for taking notes.

Please note: students are advised to remove any permanent eyelash extensions before the course starts, to ensure they are able to complete full makeup looks.

Provided materials: A professional makeup and brush kit is included in the fee, providing essential products and tools to support your learning throughout the course.

Lucy Wearing

Lucy Wearing is a British make-up artist, series consultant for BBC series GLOW UP, creative director and educator. Her approach to make-up is grounded in fine art which she studied at Liverpool John Moores. Interested in the cultural and historical aesthetic of beauty Lucy investigated the history of beauty and religion from the 15th century to date for her radio documentary for the BBC World Service “Making Faces”.

In 2017 Lucy first went to Za'atari refugee camp Jordan to set up the on going project; Beauty co-op for the women of Za’atari with Helen Storey, London College of Fashion and UNHCR.  Lucy has written and directed many short, under graduate and bespoke courses including international project delivery and assessments for London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London and is currently an Associate Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Photography and BA (Hons) Hair and Make-up for Fashion.
