Breaking into the makeup industry with the Complete Makeup Artist Short Course

Aline joined the course while considering a career change. With a background in art and drawing, makeup felt like a natural extension of the creative interests she had enjoyed for years. The course is a popular choice for those balancing it with work, with classes taking place on Saturdays.

"I've always enjoyed drawing and I've definitely got a creative side. I've always enjoyed makeup as well and I thought it's a different canvas."

Rather than focusing on one style or area, students are introduced to a wide range of techniques and contexts.

"We learned a little bit of everything; editorial, red carpet, catwalk and decades as well."

As the weeks progressed, Aline found herself experimenting with looks she would never normally create.

"We did decades for example, 1920s flapper style - things that are very outside the day-to-day. Those fun looks were definitely highlights and allow you to demonstrate a broad range for your portfolio."

For Ful, who studies BA Cosmetic Science at London College of Fashion, the course offered something different. While her degree explores the science behind beauty products, she wanted to better understand makeup artistry itself.

"I wanted to learn about the art side of makeup. It's always been my passion, and I really wanted to learn how the business works, learn the techniques and potentially work in the industry."

One of the aspects Ful found most valuable was gaining a better understanding of the day-to-day realities of working as a professional makeup artist. Alongside developing technical skills, students were introduced to industry workflows, client expectations and the different career paths available within the sector.

"My degree focuses on the science behind products, so it was really useful to learn how makeup artists actually use those products in practice. It gave me a much better understanding of the creative process and what working in the industry could be like."

Aline and Ful are now both considering professional opportunities in makeup artistry.

As she finishes her degree, Ful is looking to combine her knowledge from her BA degree with the practical experience she gained on the course, helping her stand out as she begins applying for roles in the industry.

"My aim is to find an agency and start assisting makeup artists, perhaps in editorial work. At the end of the course, Lucy gave us an informative session on how to approach agencies and brands for jobs."

Aline hopes to continue building her portfolio before applying for assistant roles.

"My plan is to continue to do what we were doing here. Now I know how to do it, I feel ready to continue trying different looks on friends, taking pictures, and then applying for assistant jobs."

For anyone considering a move into the industry, the course provides a strong starting point.

"A lot of us didn't have much experience," says Aline. "They teach you the basics and build from there, so it's a really good place to start."

Alongside the teaching and practical experience, students have access to London College of Fashion's professional makeup studios, working in an environment designed to reflect industry practice.

"The studio is so cool," says Aline. "We've got all the lights and stations. It's amazing."

Combined with a supportive group of students from different backgrounds, the experience creates opportunities to learn from one another as well as from tutors.

"We all have different styles and want to do different things. It's a collaborative environment and we've learned a lot from each other over the 10 weeks."

The next Complete Makeup Artist course begins on 16 January 2027 at London College of Fashion, UAL.
