Noyona Biswas is a BA Fine Art student from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Singapore. They joined UAL for a seven-week course at Chelsea College of Arts. In March 2023 NAFA students put on an exhibition displaying the work they created during their seven-week courses. For this exhibition, Noyona Biswas displayed their work in a small room they called the Dream Room, because once you step inside it is like you step into their subconscious mind.
The Dream room is my attempt to put myself back together. You might notice there are circles everywhere, they are symbols of unity and wholeness. All of the different mediums I used, like photography, digital illustration, film, and fabric painting, are all things that represent different aspects of myself.
Digital Illustrations
The digital illustrations talk about my metamorphosis, which is why I use a lot of bird symbolism. I wanted to see from their perspective, from the bird’s point of view. There are crows and swans represented in the art. Sometimes surrounding portraits of myself. In the final stage of the art there is a phoenix, representing my consciousness trying to transform itself.
Tiles
The reason why I worked with tiles as well, and a lot of them have faces on them, is because when I was younger, I could see faces in my bathroom tiles. I always saw it as God trying to contact and communicate with me.
Photography
In my photos, on the other hand, you can see a friend of mine. We did a photoshoot together in her room where she is painted with half concentric circles on her face, and I have the other half of the circles. It was a way to showcase that I see myself in others and I am a part of them the same way they are a part of me. I see it as an exploration of the self.
Film
The film is titled ‘Soft, Cold and Burning’. It’s kind of a journey into my own darkness. The film is divided in different parts, one of those parts is ‘Alchemy’. In it I try to do an alchemical process forming the darker aspects of myself into something that I can use.
