Meet Margo!
Margo came over from Sarah Lawrence College to study Film and Television at London College of Communication, UAL. We chatted to Margo to find out her thoughts on the course and what she's been up to since graduating, as well as a look at some of her projects.
I can't emphasize enough the amazing people I met at UAL. It can be very daunting to walk into a new school knowing absolutely no one, and I was immediately made to feel welcome and accepted. I carry that with me to this day.
What’s your name and can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Margo DePorter, I studied Film and Television at UAL London College of Communication during the fall of 2016. I graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 2018 and have been living and working in New York City ever since.
What course did you study on at UAL and why?
I studied film and television because that has been my passion for as long as I can remember. In the early years of high school, once I found out this was something you could go to college for, I knew exactly what I wanted to study in my further education.
What was the best thing you discovered while you were in London?
The people. I never anticipated making such great friends while I was abroad. Everyone was so welcoming, from existing UAL students to fellow exchange students to Londoners in general. It was an extraordinary experience.
Tell us about what you created while you were here? Images and links appreciated!
I worked with classmates on short films and screenwriting projects. I really enjoyed being able to collaborate with others, especially being new to the school and the country, it was a great way to immerse myself in the experience.
What have you been up to since you graduated? What has been your favourite project to work on recently?
Since graduating from Sarah Lawrence College in 2018, I have been living in New York City, working in post production as an assistant video editor. Finding a career in the film and television industry seemed like a daunting task, but once I realized my love of video editing, I've been able to navigate post college life and find my footing in the industry.
How did your time at UAL influence your next steps?
UAL encouraged us to work in groups and to share responsibilities within the process of creating short films. We took turns directing, editing, writing, shooting etc. and this really allowed me to fully realize my passion for editing. I discovered that each time a new project was presented to us, I immediately gravitated towards wanting to be involved in the editing side of things. When I returned to New York I knew how to proceed in terms of finishing up my studies and pursuing a career in the film and television industry because of the opportunities I had at UAL to explore all of the different sides of filmmaking.
Anything else to add?
I can't emphasize enough the amazing people I met at UAL. It can be very daunting to walk into a new school knowing absolutely no one, and I was immediately made to feel welcome and accepted. I carry that with me to this day.
