Preparing for the Show

Risk Assessments (RAMS)

If you are exhibiting work in the shows, you will need to produce a Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) for your exhibit to demonstrate that you understand the risks that are created by your piece during installation, the show and the take down. Your tutor will provide RAMS templates for you in advance of the show build. Once complete, these RAMS should be sent to your Tutor/area leader for approval.

PAT testing small electrical items

If your show display includes electrical items, they will need to be PAT tested before they are installed. PAT testing is designed to check the wiring of electrical equipment for any defects that could be dangerous. The most common items in the shows are:

  • Projectors
  • Laptops/iPad/tablets with chargers
  • TVs/monitors
  • Extension cables
  • DVD players

Please note:

  • Un-fused power adapters must not be used – they must be a UK 3 pin fused type
  • Fog machines are not permitted in any work.
  • No open electrical circuits or bare wiring. Work must be contained in an electrical project, box, and no exposed bare electrical wires.
  • Any electrical wiring for mains power must use standard 3 core cable.
  • Any complex electrical installations are subject to the electrician's inspection and approval

Get PAT tested

PAT testing of electrical items will take place ahead of Shows. Bring your items to the drop-in PAT testing session in the Street:

  • Monday 8 June, 2-4pm
  • Wednesday 10 June, 2-4pm
  • Friday 12 June, 2-4pm

Please speak to a member of your course team for larger electrical items that require PAT testing in studios.

Student helpers

If you would like to bring volunteers into the College to help you build your show display, please complete the Student Helper Permission Request Form (PDF 203KB) and submit this to your Course Leader. You may then be able to collect a wristband for your helper from the Control Room. These wristbands will only be valid before the show begins and for the specified day.

If you would like to bring in paid contractors, they must complete their own risk assessment and method statement (RAMS) and submit this to estateshelpdesk@arts.ac.uk for approval.

Funding to help with your show

The University Hardship Fund is a means-tested hardship grant to assist with study costs. It is not a loan and does not need to be repaid. Eligibility requirements are on the application form.

Children

Some works will be unsuitable for young children. We'll mark these pieces with signs, and our staff will help you avoid them. Children must be supervised by an adult at all times.

Baby-changing facilities are available at the rear of the building on the ground floor.

Some show spaces may not be suitable for strollers, where possible please use a sling. A stroller park will be located at the south end of the Street by the Arts Shop during public opening days (18-21 June) however please note that this is not available during the Previews.

Keeping personal belongings safe

During the shows, you may be bringing expensive personal items/equipment into the building. Please take steps to protect your belongings, as the University cannot take responsibility for loss or damage of personal property. To keep your items safe, please remove or lock your valuables away when you are not present.

Security officers will be stationed at key points around the building during the shows, they are there to ensure safe procedures and behaviour onsite and not to monitor personal belongings. If you see anything suspicious, please report it to one of the officers.

Invigilating your work

If your work requires power and needs to be switched on and off then please make sure you are in attendance to do this or make arrangements with others on your course to help. Please keep in mind that there are two Preview evenings this year and make arrangements accordingly.

Selling your work

If you choose, you can make your work available to purchase by linking to your online store on UAL Showcase. Please read our guidance on how to sell your work.

Artwork sales are handled directly by individuals. Devices should be disconnected from the CSM Shows public wifi/UAL wifi networks when managing payments as these are not encrypted. You must use your own payment device as UAL card machines (PDQs) cannot be used to sell student work.

UAL Showcase

UAL's global platform Showcase is a space for you to share your work and make connections with future employers and creative collaborators. Please upload your profiles as soon as possibly and ahead of your deadline.

Alcohol

Please do not bring your own alcohol to the show as it contradicts our license. There will be card-only bars within the building serving a range of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages.
