Subtle Perceptions

Screening of new moving image works exploring subtle perceptions of space, place, time, memory and embodiment.

How can artistic research tune our perceptions to those subtle qualities of place, space and materiality that are often hidden or overlooked? The artists gathered for this screening invite us to perceive differently - slowing down, turning in, and immersing ourselves - to gain new insights.

Stop-motion filmRecord (間): Shifting SpacebySophie Hsieh(MA Fine Art: Drawing) follows the gradual movement of small paper stones across different surfaces. Through subtle changes in their arrangement, the work explores how space, distance and the gaps between objects shape our perception over time.

InWHERE EMOTIONS TAKE PLACE,Jiayi Xing(MA Fine Art: Computational Arts) asks where do our emotions live? Through 3D scanning and moving images, this work explores how everyday places become connected to personal memories and feelings, inviting us to reconsider the spaces we pass through every day.

Cristabelle Jégard(MA Fine Art: Painting) presents A conversation about Fractals in Art featuring Dr Richard Taylor of the University of Oregon. An in-depth interview discussing Taylor's scientific discovery of fractal patterns in the work of Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock, and why wild swimming in natural ponds places the body directly inside a living fractal system.

This event is part of Dispersion, a celebration of practice-led research across a vibrant spectrum of material and energetic forms, hosted by MA Fine Art Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, in the South London Gallery’s Clore Studio.

Dispersion recalls the diffusion of ideas, the dissolving of boundaries, and the interactive forces that shape art practice; not oriented towards a singular object or event but engaged in an ongoing process of transformation. At the end of fifteen months of concentrated research, the final gathering of this MA Fine Art cohort stages an experiment in dispersion via publication, performance, and participation.

Featuring a daily public programme of performances, screenings, talks and workshops, alongside artist books, essays, and zines. With work by graduating students from MA Fine Art: Computational Arts, MA Fine Art: Drawing, MA Fine Art: Painting, MA Fine Art: Printmaking, MA Fine Art: Photography, and MA Fine Art: Sculpture.

You are welcome to drop in any time to explore the work on display. Events are free to attend and open to all (18+). Explore the rest of the Dispersion programme here.
