Diasporic Films

This event is for UAL students and staff only, a valid UAL ID card will be needed to enter the site and attend.

Diasporic Films is a series of free contextualised screenings celebrating and depicting diaspora communities or made by diaspora filmmakers. The themes are often reflective of identity, representation, displacement and visibility. The series seeks to highlight how culture, heritage and experience can open dialogues about our own positionalities, making us consider how such themes can intersect with our own practices.

The series runs from Wednesday 7 October 2026 to Wednesday 25 November 2026, 6pm-8.30pm, in London College of Communication, Lecture Theatre C (LTC).

• 07/10, MISSISSIPPI MASALA (1991) - The vibrant cultures of India, Uganda, and the American South come together in this look at the complexities of love, via racism, colourism, culture clash, and displacement.
• 14/10, RUDEBOY: THE STORY OF TROJAN RECORDS (2018) - The story of an iconic reggae and ska record label and part of the revolution that unfolded between Jamaican and British youth culture in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s Britain.
• 21/10, DRYLONGSO (1998) - A woman in a photography class, Pica, begins taking pictures of black men out of fear they will soon be extinct.
• 28/10, PAST LIVES (2023) - Two childhood friends are separated after one's family emigrates from South Korea. Two decades later, they are reunited in New York for one fateful week.
• 04/11, *SURPRISE STUDENT SCREENING PICK + INTRO.* - Announced week of event.
• 11/11, *SURPRISE STUDENT SCREENING PICK + INTRO.* - Announced week of event.
• 18/11, NEWS FROM HOME (1976) - Director Chantal Akerman reads letters sent to her from her mother in Belgium, against a tableau of shots of 1970s New York.
• 25/11, QUEEN OF MY DREAMS (2023) - A Bollywood-infused story of the love and war between a queer Canadian woman and her Pakistani mother, spanning across decades and continents.

Doors will be open from 6PM, screenings start promptly at 6.15PM. Late comers are welcome but please appreciate and respect the attending audience when entering the room.

Booking is not required, though appreciated. Seating allowance is subject to room capacity.
