Course description

Course overview

This course will look at the powerful capabilities of using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop when making patterns and repeats. This course is for individuals who already have experience of using Illustrator and Photoshop - if you are new to either program, please look at our beginners' courses.

Both photoshop and illustrator have incredibly powerful and accurate tools that allow the creation of seamless linear and area repeats. You will learn to make these repeats as blocks and brushes, take existing patterns and rebuild them, deconstruct and analyse repeats.

Who this course is for

The skills of making patterns and repeats are essential for anyone working in the applied arts, such as product designers, fashion and textile designers and production ceramicists. This course is suitable for anyone who needs to create accurate patterns which will then be printed/applied to a surface.

This is an intermediate-level course. You need to have experience of using both Photoshop and Illustrator and are interested in taking your skills to a new level. You will need to be familiar with working with multiple layers, and all the basic colour correction and retouching tools in Photoshop, and in Illustrator, you need to be familiar with building shapes and using many of the drawing tools

Tablets cannot be used with the UAL computers. Please note - UAL cannot provide technical support for personal devices.

IMPORTANT - Adobe ID Login for Short Course Students

Students will need to create an account with Adobe (unless you already have one) to access the Adobe suite at the college; instructions are included below. You will need to use a personal email address to create this. If you already have an account with Adobe, please make sure you bring your login details with you on the first day of the course.

Creating an Adobe account is free

The software will only be accessible when logged into a UAL networked computer

The same account can be used outside of the University, but software will only be accessible through a personal paid subscription that students will need to set up independently

You can still create an account on the day but doing this beforehand will save time and avoid delays to the start of the class

If you already have an Adobe ID/ subscription you can use this on your short course rather than setting up a new account
