Course overview

Learn how to prep and create key fashion hairstyles such as a straight blow-dry, a sleek high ponytail and how to apply a head of rollers on this Introduction to Fashion Hair short course.

You’ll explore various styling techniques using hair tools like pins and kirby grips, as well as how to safely use heated appliances to create smooth, kink-free looks.

The course will also explore the use of hair styling products and how to apply them, securing and protecting hair, as well as health, safety and hygiene protocols.

Not only will you be shown hair styling techniques, but you’ll be given the space to incorporate your own creativity into the various hair styles you’ll be creating.

This course is aimed at young creatives with an interest in fashioning and styling hair. It could be useful to those wanting to explore other areas of fashion styling or those wanting to get into hair and makeup artistry.

  • Identify and apply the methods used on how to create precise hair sectioning
  • Identify and apply the techniques used to straighten and blow-dry hair, including how to hold the brush, direct the hair dryer to produce the right result without fly-aways and finish the look using a comb and straightener
  • Identify hairstyling products used for specific looks and how to apply them
  • Carry out the preparation work involved in creating a sleek and straight ponytail, with no bagging at the back of the head
  • Identify and apply techniques on how to prep and protect hair for makeup, events and the catwalk
  • Determine how the size of a roller can create different styles of waves and movement
  • Apply a full head of rollers using pins in a ‘brick set’ style, making sure the rollers are on base, clean sectioning with even tension and hair evenly distributed
  • Dress the hair into a style with volume
  • Create various waves and curls, such as the barrel curl using heated appliances such as tongs
  • Receive a digital badge and certificate of attendance

Sue Groundwater is a hairstylist and educator currently teaching on the BA Editorial Hair and Makeup for Fashion course at the London College of Fashion. She has worked as a visiting lecturer and now holds the role of Specialist Teaching and Learning Technician at LCF.
Her professional background includes extensive theatre experience, with notable productions such as Les Misérables, Chess, and Buddy. Alongside her teaching, Sue remains actively involved in the industry and has gained valuable experience in fashion as a hair artist.
