Screenwriting for Beginners
Learn practical, creative ways to develop your ideas into a screenplay on this engaging and collaborative course, Screenwriting for Beginners. Taught through a series of workshops, tutorials, screenings and group crits you will work on the tenets of story structure and find your own voice.
You will learn the simple tenets of story structure, understand how to develop characters with connection and how to follow those character’s stories through to satisfying conclusions.
By the end of the course you will have completed your own short screenplay, and understand that the most important decision is knowing what story you want to tell.
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- Understand the tenets of dramatic structure
- Awareness of your own artistic practice and how this may differ from accepted tenets
- Develop characters through observation and detailed development
- Engage in analysis of film screenplays
- Begin to navigate the industry landscape
Who should Attend
This course is ideal for anyone who is interested in developing a narrative script or screenplay. You may be looking to develop your own project or move into a screenwriting role.
Beginner. You don't need any previous experience but you should have an interest in film as well as basic computer skills.

John Fitzpatrick is a playwright and filmmaker. He also lectures in filmmaking and acting at Universities including Central School of Speech & Drama, St Mary’s and LCC.
He co-wrote the short film WREN BOYS which was nominated for a BAFTA and a BIFA as well as being on the long list for the 2019 Oscars. It has won best UK short at the UK Film Festival, best short at The Galway Film Fleadh and the Jury award from Film London and has screened internationally at festivals including BFI London Film Festival, SXSW and Sundance.
THIS MUCH(or An Act of Violence Towards the Institution of Marriage), his first full-length play for stage, was produced at the Soho Theatre 2016.
In 2017 he was awarded a grant for playwriting from the Peggy Ramsey Foundation and his latest play REARED was produced at THEATRE503 in early 2018.
He has directed music videos for Mercury nominated band The Big Moon and the short film DOG which screened at festivals around the UK including LSFF.
