Course description

Course overview

During the course, students learn to grind and wet pack enamels onto metal and fire them in a kiln. The course explores techniques such as cloisonne, where the enamel colours are contained within a wire pattern work, champleve; where the enamels are wet packed into recessed pattern areas and using foils and textures.

Students have the opportunity to work in the fully-equipped jewellery studio at Central Saint Martins and work on a test piece to gain confidence with the techniques. Students then apply the skills learnt to a simple pendant and a pair of earrings.

After completing this course, students may wish to progress to other jewellery short courses to continue developing their jewellery-making skills.

This course is available in multiple formats: a 5-week evening course or a 3-day course. If a certain format isn't listed please check back for future dates.

Who this course is for

This course is aimed at anyone interested in enamelling and jewellery making who would like to extend their skills. You may have done some 3D making before or want to learn how to make your own jewellery.

You'll need to be comfortable working with hand-tools and working with heat from a small enamelling kiln and a small flame for soldering your metal together. An interest in working with colours and metal is essential but no previous experience is needed.
