Isabella Minkin joined UAL Study Abroad for the 3-week Creative Industries London module in January 2024. In this interview she tells all about her experience and her final project.

How was studying abroad in London? What was your favourite thing about the city?

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience studying abroad in London. I am so lucky that I was able to travel here to expand my knowledge of not only art but the city itself. While it sounds strange my favourite part about the city was its transportation. So many people dedicate their life to helping others get around easily and they are always inventing new ways to make things accessible. I loved that the Tube allows you to zip across the city in minutes and each station has its own character and vibe. The buses and trains make it possible to live without owning a car, which is fascinating to me as I don’t come from a place where that is possible.

What did you think about the Creative Industries London module? What did you enjoy about your classes?

I loved that both my tutors, Oli and Nida balanced each other out with their different styles of teaching and knowledge. They asked the students their opinions and moulded the curriculum around what we wanted to get out of the class. There was a trip for everyone no matter what their interests were, and we all got to explore the city in such a unique way!

Tell us about your Creative Industries London project? What was the inspiration behind it? What was your creative process?

My project was the Exploration of Coffee shops in London as someone who doesn’t drink coffee. Whenever I go into a coffee shop I am always sort of in a place where I feel left out. As someone who doesn’t indulge in the main product it can sometimes be hard to find places I like with alternatives. London is a place where coffee shops are adorned with coffee options but also lots of tea options too. My goal was to visit different coffee shops both chains and independent ones and rate them based on more than just their products, like the vibe and service and how comfortable I felt staying there after finishing my food or drink. I would go to each place and read for a bit to see how I felt.

Why did you choose UAL Study Abroad?

To be honest it is a requirement to study abroad, and this was the only option in London. This being said I have been very impressed and satisfied so far with my experiences here.

Is there anything you want to share with future study abroad students/ future applicants?

Use the time given to explore places you wouldn’t normally go, even if you don’t have much time, I would recommend asking your tutors for recommendations and using those to fill your time.

Would you recommend the experience at UAL?

Yes, I definitely would! It’s a great way to understand another side of this huge city and so much fun!
