SURGE III takes place at Lethaby Gallery (Window Gallery), Central Saint Martins, UAL, 13 to 27 March, 2024.

Layers of Perception by Natalia Mesa

Two sculptural paintings composed of engraved and painted acrylic layers. These works are based on research into adaptive sensory robotics for prosthetic development and influenced by the artist and researcher's encounters with prosthetic users. Each layer represents a point along the path to experiencing touch - with or without a prosthetic. There are mechanical, electrical and chemical layers, as well as phantom limb pain, physical trauma, healing, and support systems as layers too. The piece contained in the box signifies the nature of the research, while the other work represents the expansiveness of the patient's personal experiences.
