On 22 July, UAL's Black Creatives Hub partnered with The Catalyst Collective to host a Creative Insights Day, bringing together 8 young Black girls aged 14 to 17 for a programme of workshops, conversation and career inspiration. The event reflected both organisations’ commitment to supporting and empowering the next generation of Black creatives.

The day began with a UAL Insights workshop led by London College of Fashion graduate and Creative Producer Lorraine Brobby. Participants were encouraged to think like creative directors, exploring how ideas are developed into visual concepts and learning more about the creative thinking behind campaigns, brands and projects.

Drawing on her own professional experience, Lorraine shared insights into the realities of working in the creative sector, encouraging participants to trust their ideas, embrace their individuality and remain curious about the opportunities available to them.

"I learned that there are so many things you could do with your own creativity and that you should take any opportunities that is available."

In the afternoon, the group took part in an interactive drama workshop led by actor Laura Buckeridge. Through a series of practical exercises, participants explored storytelling, communication and self-expression, developing confidence while gaining an insight into careers in performance and the wider creative industries.

The day concluded with a panel discussion and Q&A featuring Lorraine Brobby, Laura Buckeridge and London College of Communication graduate and freelance Graphic Designer Sandy Christ. Together they shared reflections on their creative journeys, discussing the challenges they had faced, the lessons they had learned and the experiences that helped shape their careers.

The discussion gave participants a realistic insight into life as a creative professional, with the panellists also sharing practical advice on building networks and staying resilient in a competitive industry.

Representation was an important theme throughout the day. Hearing directly from Black creatives working across different disciplines gave participants the opportunity to see themselves reflected in industries they may aspire to join.

The speakers also highlighted that there is no single route into a creative career, encouraging participants to pursue their interests, remain open to new experiences and recognise the value of their own perspectives.

"I would recommend because it has really improved my awareness on what the creative industry entails."

The Creative Insights Day reflects the mission of UAL's Black Creatives Hub to celebrate, support and empower its Black community while increasing the visibility of Black students, staff and alumni. Through partnerships with organisations such as The Catalyst Collective, the Hub continues to create opportunities for young people to meet role models, build confidence and explore different pathways into the creative industries.
