Summer and short-term opportunities

Short-term opportunities usually take place during the summer months. You can do them instead of a term time exchange, or they're a great way to test whether a longer exchange is for you.

Arts Abroad summer school grant

Apply for the chance to study at a summer school at one of UAL’s European partner universities. You’ll get full financial support through the Arts Abroad grant.

The grant will cover the cost of your:

  • Application and/or registration fees
  • Tuition fees
  • Flights
  • Accommodation
  • Any extracurricular activities included in the summer school programme
  • A daily subsistence rate (if you're in one of the underrepresented groups below).

Who can apply

You must currently be a home fee paying student studying on an undergraduate degree course at UAL. You should be in your first or second year of studies.

All eligible students are welcome to apply. However, UAL is committed to increasing access and participation among underrepresented groups. We’ll give priority to students if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Your household income is £25,000 or under, per year.
  • Your household income is above £25,000 but below £50,000 per year.
  • You’re in receipt of universal credit or income benefits.
  • You receive the UAL bursary.
  • You’re a care leaver or care giver.
  • You’ve taken part in the UAL Insights programme.

Where you can go

Places are available at a choice of 6 summer schools at universities across Europe. The summer schools have a variety of start and end dates to suit you, between June and September. Students will be funded for up to a maximum of 4 weeks at one of these schools.

How to apply

Complete our online application form. This explores why you’re interested in taking part in the summer school programme.

  • Explore the summer school websites and review the programmes on offer. You’ll need to explain to us why you’re interested in your chosen summer school and how you’ll benefit from taking part.
  • The process is extremely competitive. To give yourself the best chance of being selected, fill in the application in as much detail as possible.
  • We recommend that you choose 3 summer schools you’d like to apply to. If your first option is oversubscribed, we can then allocate you a place at one of your other choices.

Application deadline

The deadline to apply is usually mid-March. After the deadline we'll assess your application. We aim to provide you with an outcome within 2 weeks.

Next steps

Once your Arts Abroad grant is confirmed, you'll need to apply directly to your allocated summer school. The Global Mobility team will give you more information about this if you're successful with your Arts Abroad grant application. Don't book flights or accommodation until your summer school place is confirmed.

If you plan to attend a summer school whether you get a grant or not, you can apply independently and make all your own arrangements. It's important you let us know you're doing this, so make sure to email us at internationalmobility@arts.ac.uk.
