Biography

Maitrayee is a Lecturer in Communications and Media at London College of Communication. She has a PhD in Cultural Studies from Middlesex University (awarded in 2018), and her doctoral research focused on the topic of non-fiction writing, writing about the marginalised, and transnational literary capital in contemporary cultural field. She also completed her Masters degree in Culture and Society at London School of Economics in 2010. Maitrayee also has international industry experience in digital marketing, especially within the publishing industry. She has also taught as an Associate Lecturer in Middlesex University, University of Hertfordshire, University of West London and University of Sheffield between 2016-2019.

Her current research focuses on digital reading, public spaces and transnational activism. She is particularly interested in representations of marginalisation within activism and movements, shaping of identities within activist spaces, the construction of publics on the internet, and mediated ways in which affects associated with social activism is experienced and communicated. Her first article, which draws from her PhD research, titled 'Representing "The Other India" in Transnational Public Spaces' is forthcoming in the journal Reserches en Communicacion.

She is also a member of Association of Internet Researchers and International Communication Association, and is presenting a paper from her current project on protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act - 'Chudi, Bindi Aur Hijab: Anti-Patriarchy Movements within Anti-Authoritarianism in India’ in AOIR annual conference in October 2020. She is also co-editing a themed commentary and criticism section of journal Feminist Review in autumn 2020 with Prof. Radhika Gajjala (Bowling Green State University). A book she contributed to, edited by Professor Suman Gupta (British Open University), titled 'Social Analysis of COVID-19: A Collective Journal' published by Routledge India is forthcoming in November 2020.
