Biography

I am a South African architect, urban researcher, and educator dedicated to exploring the intersections of architecture, spatial justice, and social equity. My work is rooted in a reparative design practice that challenges conventional architectural approaches by advocating for inclusive and participatory methods. As the co-founder of 1to1 – Agency of Engagement, I have focused on bridging the gap between grassroots urban struggles and formal architectural practice, particularly in post-apartheid South Africa. My practice-led research explores how architecture can become a tool for advocacy and systemic change, working alongside marginalized communities to co-create spatial solutions.

My academic journey has been marked by international engagement, having completed my PhD at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, my research critiqued traditional architectural pedagogy and advocated for critical approaches in design education. I am committed to expanding architectural discourse to include voices and narratives often excluded from mainstream dialogues, particularly from the Global South. This focus is central to my teaching philosophy, which emphasizes critical thinking, social relevance, and creative research methodologies.

I am actively involved in curriculum development, public lectures, and workshops that explore urbanism through the lenses of climate justice, ethical design practices, and reparative collaboration. My ongoing projects include developing platforms such as the Southern African ArchiPhD Resource and Just Spatial Design ZA, which aim to foster knowledge exchange and collaborative networks between the UK and Southern Africa. I am passionate about creating educational and professional environments that encourage inventive thinking and equitable participation, pushing the boundaries of traditional architectural practice to be more responsive to contemporary socio-political challenges.
