Biography
Dr Alejandro Luna is a transdisciplinary researcher, educator, and artist working across biodesign, fashion and textile innovation, and sustainability transitions. His practice focuses on how design can translate biological knowledge and ecological thinking into materials, systems, and cultural narratives, supporting new approaches to environmental innovation. At Central Saint Martins (UAL), he teaches on the MA Biodesign and contributes to the Living Systems Lab, developing design-led research integrating living materials, bio-receptive systems, and regenerative approaches. His work engages closely with fashion, textiles, and spatial design, exploring how biological processes can inform material innovation and circular practices.
He brings experience in leading interdisciplinary education and research programmes in sustainability and innovation, including directing the MSc in Science and Technology Policy at the University of Sussex and contributing to sustainability strategy within business education. This informs his approach to collaborative research, knowledge exchange, and industry engagement.
Alongside his role at UAL, he is Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London and has advised UN Climate Change (Resilience Frontiers) on climate adaptation and innovation.
His work spans academic research and practice, with publications in journals including Nature Communications and Science and Public Policy, alongside an active artistic practice developed through Maison Trampoline, a platform for collaborative projects across art, architecture, and biodesign.
He works with SMEs, designers, and research partners to develop design-led R&D, material experimentation, and innovation projects, positioning design as a bridge between science, industry, and culture.
